Students not only learn in campus, but they need to know the reality in the work field and learn directly from experts. This method was implemented at the Tristar Institute Group, including at Tristar Institute Batu.
On Thursday, April 25, 2019, students of D3 Hotel Management conducted a study tour at éL Royale Kartika Hotel Batu. Thirty two students participated in the tour and they were accompanied by Miss Andista, an English lecturer, and R. Paulus W. Soetrisno M.Par, a lecturer who was also the Head of D3 Hospitality Program at Akpar Majapahit.
"Visiting hospitality industry is aimed at introducing students to the reality of the work world while at the same time increasing insight and knowledge by learning directly from the experts. For example about Front Office, House Keeping and others," said R. Paulus.
The activity was started at 12.00. The students were divided into three groups. They got the opportunity to explore rooms and facilities of the hotel and even the kitchen of this four-star hotel which had high heritage value.
The hotel was designed with ancient European architectural styles and was built in 1800. It was originally a villa belonging to the Sarkies family. Over time, the building which is at Jl. Panglima Sudirman No. 127 changed ownership and function. It was once functioned as a hospital and then in 1986 it was developed into a hotel.
During the visit in the hotel, the Executive HK (House Keeping), Cucuk Harianto and Paulus guided the students to practice how to do bedmaking correctly. In addition, the students also got towel art lessons, the art of arranging unique and interesting towels in various forms, among them were elephant-shaped.
Furthermore, the students also received material about Front Office (FO) delivered by Tovid Agus Ivandi, éL Royale Kartika Hotel Batu's FO Manager. He described the duties and responsibilities of Front Office in the hotel. He said that its role was very important because FO services determined the first and the last impression of the hotel. "Since checking in until leaving the hotel (checking out), guests must get good service," added Tovid.
Ratuning, one of the participant, shared her experience at eL Royale Kartika Hotel. For her, this program was very interesting and fun because students got new insights and knowledge in the real world of work.
"We get explanation and can observe direct practice of house keeping department and how to arrange and organize a bed sheet. Earlier we were also taught the technique of making animal towel, especially how to make an elephant," said the girl who was called Ratu.
Before the lunch buffet, the students first took part in a cooking demo of How to Make Chicken Cordon Bleu by Chef Pamungkas Suparmo, the Executive Chef of éL Royale Kartika Hotel Batu. He was assisted by Febriana, a Tristar student who was on the Job Training (OJT) at the hotel.
"This activity is very good. Moreover, the students participated really enjoy the activity. I hope they can open their minds. Know how House Keeping is, observe Front Office and hotel kitchen through direct learning. Especially because this hotel is a four-star hotel therefore they get new knowledge when returning home,"said Chef Pamungkas who is also the chairman of the East Java ICA (Indonesian Chef Association).
While Yosi, the HRD manager of éL Royale Kartika Hotel Batu, hoped this collaboration could continue. "We are very happy to welcome the students. Tristar may join and study at our place. Through this activity students can know about the hospitality industry so that they are better prepared when they enter the workforce after graduating," she said.
